Butcher Box Review: Curated Grass Fed Beef, Organic Chicken and Heritage Pork
Butcher Box provided a mixed box of meats in exchange for an honest review. Post contains affiliate links.
Update:
I’ve now received several boxes from Butcher Box and love it! It is definitely worth the investment. I love the selection (and the bacon!). I find that compared to prices at my local grocery store it is comparable, if not a much better deal and has a wider variety of products. Butcher Box Review
A few weeks ago I was contacted by Butcher Box about their grass-fed beef, organic chicken, and heritage pork boxes that are delivered to you. Butcher Box prides themselves in delivering quality meat to their subscribers. The goal of the founder was to make quality beef easily available to the masses. Each box is specially curated to include high-quality cuts from small farms. Being this was my first time using a service that delivered meat, I had a bunch of questions, I’m sure you do too! Hopefully, this little question and answer session will help you decide if a product like Butcher box is for you. If you have any additional questions, leave a comment or send me an email!
How is it shipped?
My first concern about receiving a box of meat in the mail was how it would be shipped. I am in Miami and it is H-O-T. My concern was null, the boxes come well packed with dry ice. As a matter of fact, I was actually out-of-town when the box came and while my husband did put the meat in the freezer, the foam shipping box was still sitting in the kitchen. When I opened it, the dry ice was still frozen. It could have easily been in shipping one or two more days without an issue.
Can I choose what is in the box? Will I know what is in it ahead of time?
The short answer is no. Each box is chosen to provide for a variety of cuts each month and you don’t have any control over this (other than choosing if you want just beef or a mixed box). They do have some add-on items such as whole chickens, rib eye, beef bones, and bacon that you can be added on.
I was a bit unsure of this, but when I received my box I was very pleased with the selection. We received 2 packages of thin sliced steak, 4 thick cut pork chops, a package of bacon, a package of tri-tip steak, a package of chicken breasts, and 2 blocks of ground beef. It was a nice selection.
Will they give me ideas of what to do with the meat? What if I don’t recognize a cut?
I was a bit concerned about this. I’m in a very busy season, so while I love having things delivered. It saves so much time. However, I don’t have a lot of time to figure out what to do with an unfamiliar cut of meat.
Luckily, there were some great recipes included. We tried out the Easy Paleo Pho (which of course we made non-paleo by adding rice noodles) and it was delicious. The steak was so tender, no fat (normally when we buy meat I end up trimming a ton of fat off of it). I didn’t expect to be able to tell much of a difference, but it was obvious that the quality was better than what I usually buy at the store.
How much does it cost? Why should I invest in Butcher Box over Whole Foods or just buying regular meat at the grocery store?
One month is $129.00, including shipping. This is enough meat for 20 servings. You get discounts for doubling your order and prices for add-ons very. I did price everything as best as I could to Whole Foods. It was about the same cost, but there is definitely a greater variety. It was very difficult to find the same variety in grass-fed beef , organic chicken, and heritage pork that is available through Butcher Box.
Buying grass fed beef is a personal choice. Personally, I find the taste and quality much better, but you have to do what is best for you and your family. You can read more about the reasoning behind eating grass fed beef on their website.
My Final Butcher Box Review
It is more expensive than what I am used to spending, but I have been trying to buy high-quality meat and this fits the bill. I went through what I received and it is about a month’s worth of meat for my family. I would add on whole chicken and beef bones in order to have a bit extra. We also like using bones for broths and soups.
While it is a bit higher than what I’m used to spending, I am getting a whole months worth of quality meat for the same amount as it costs my family to go out to eat twice. I am planning on trying it out and will report back on to how it is working for my family.

May 12, 2018 at 12:48 pmPackage came two days late. Dry ice was gone, meat is room temp and bleeding through the bag into the box. Their customer service has not responded to a single call or email of mine.

March 27, 2018 at 12:09 pmHello,
I have had similar problems. I have never written a comment online before but I am fed-up.
The meat for us has been so-so. A special prder at Christmas was not good at all, tuff and a lot of waste.
Worse is their treatment of customers. I have had several problems. Problems with the “free” this and that. Whatever is promised for a “special offer” is not delivered. Whether it’s bacon, free knives, discounts- I have had to fight for each thing despite doing nothing wrong – but giving them my money.
Customer service is lacking, their answers have been unabashedly incorrect at times. The awful part is that there is an attitude that they are right- and you are stupid, and you are wrong. They blame the customer with lame, very lame responses.
For us, althouh I was thrilled with not having to think about which meats to buy each week, it has been an unwanted headache.
Further, I will not reward a company which does not care.
Sincerely,
Amy

March 27, 2018 at 12:32 pmI’m so sorry you had such a bad experience. I’ve received them several times and have enjoyed it, but I always like to here others opinions. If you like the idea of a meat subscription, you could try Grass Roots (https://eatatourtable.com/grass-roots-farmers-cooperative/). It’s a bit different because you choose the meat.

April 14, 2017 at 6:07 pmI disagree. I recently tried butcher box and received my first shipment. The brisket was fatty and the 2 one pound squares of 85/15 are certainly not worth $11 per pound. Sirloin is not the best cut of meat and 4 little patties were inclued in the box. I cancelled my future orders. For the price, they could provide better quality of meat. The bag it all came in was very nice.
