The Search for Healthier Snacks
While I am such a huge baking addict, I also love to balance it with cooking healthy snacks for my kids. May it be small dishes used for sides during dinner or as a treat during snack time, one of my hobbies is to experiment and learn about healthy recipes I can make for my children. They’re picky eaters, so I make sure to incorporate fun and healthy meals that are still delicious. This time, I tried fried seaweed! And I was surprised that it was such a hit with the kids, similar to how they reacted with my bacon jerky. A plus side? It’s gluten-free! If my picky eaters loved it, I’m sure yours will too!
Wondering how to make this Fried Seaweed Recipe even better? Try following these other tips to help you out:
- If you’re on a diet or want to skip out on the oil for a lower-calorie option, then omit the oil and use an air fryer instead.
- Pair the crispy seaweed with drinks to tone down the saltiness of the fried seaweed. You can also use this as a delicious side to Korean or Japanese cuisine. It’s also very popular with Chinese dishes.
- When using kale or any other spring cabbage, you’ll need to make sure that you thoroughly wash it down to avoid any contaminants. Also, it should be very dry so that the end results won’t be a soggy mess.
- While I would urge you to consume this warm, you can add any leftovers back in the fridge, and it can last for about three days. But you will lose the crispiness!

A Recipe for Fried Seaweed to Impress Your Kids (Gluten-Free)
- 1 package dried seaweed You can also use kale if seaweed isn't available
- 1 cup of or rapeseed oil or canola
- 1/2 teaspoon Chinese 5 Spice powder
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Heat the oil in a saucepan with high sides. Add a sheet of seaweed (or kale if using) allowing it to deep-fry for about two minutes or till crispy.
- Using tongs or a slotted spoon, remove seaweed and allow to drain on paper towels.
- Repeat with the other seaweed sheets.
- Turn off the heat and remove the excess oil from the pot.
- Carefully break the seaweed sheets into chip sized pieces.
- Add back to the pot and toss with powdered spice, sugar, and salt till well combined.
- Put it in a serving bowl, serve it and enjoy!
